Hoan Kiem Lake is located in the center of Hanoi. The water here is fresh and green year-round. The name of this lake is based on a story in the past. Do you know Le Loi, one of the famous generals of Vietnam? The story goes that when Le Loi was in the war against the aggressor, he received a gift from God. It was a magic golden sword. It had helped him defeat the enemy and become the King. After that, when he was taking a boat trip on this lake, a golden turtle came and asked him to give the sword back. Therefore, the lake was named “Hoan Kiem”. It means “Return the sword”. 

 

Hoan Kiem Lake now is situated inside a complex of Ngoc Son Temple, The Huc Bridge and Pen Tower around. There are many types of flowers and plants around the lake. What could not be missed in this place is the Turtle Tower, which lies in the middle of the Lake. It reminds Vietnamese people about the great help of the Golden Turtle. This special complex makes a colorful natural picture. Hoan Kiem Lake is one of the first places to see if you arrive in Hanoi. You can learn many interesting stories about the lake and other beautiful places when you come here.

My father said that Hoan Kiem Lake is a gem in the heart of Hanoi. A thousand years have passed, the lake water is still emerald green. Standing on a high-rise building looking down, Sword Lake looks like an oval mirror reflecting the sky, clouds and trees along the shore. I don't know if the words "Thuan Thien" on the treasured sword of the old Le king are still intact, only seeing the ancient Turtle Tower still lying dormant on the mound covered with green grass in the middle of the lake. Waves rippled in rows as if making the clock bells on the Hanoi Post Office building radiate farther on the lake. To the north, The Huc Son Bridge leading the entrance to Ngoc Son Temple is filled with incense. At the two ends of the bridge, the low branches of the trees covered the railing with leaves.
